It might surprise many that India was among the earliest users of the Glock, with the SPG.
Though I've no way to verify this some old insiders from the earliest batches even claimed that a number of minor alterations and 'improvements' in the Glock design were based on Indian feed back.....

Its true the Mumbai police do. You find the male commandos on motorcycles, the pillion rider carries a 9mm Sterling and the rider a pistol mostly P35 copy. You see them in larger nos. especially when the politicians decide to be a PITA a.k.a VIP movement

Ah you mean Police Commandos, somehow I forgot about those guys...maybe I feel that the real ones are in the army.

Dev, apart from SPG, CISF personnel have a few Glock 17 in their training school. I have a few friends who have fired using Glock 17 during their advance training and needless to say that they immidiately fell in love with the weapon.

I shot a glock long ago at 15 yards. Ofcourse due to the 'lethal weapon' movie series I was madly infactuated with the Beretta 92f and so I also hired a beretta 92f. Using range ammo I found that the Beretta worked flawlessly and gobbled all the ammo. The Glock jammed twice but my gawd what groups the pistol shot...placing five within an inch was very easy with it, using a double handed hold.

NSG, MCF, Indian Army, IAF, Punjab Police, TN Police, Maharashtra, UP, AP(I think), Meghalaya Police...Jonah tells me Mizoram Police is also receiving a batch.... that's what I'm aware of. I'm sure there are other units and state forces that use smallish numbers of the Glock.

A relative of mine used to work as a finger prints expert with the AP police dept.he was assigned to the bandobust duties during elections and was equipped with a revolver.i once asked him if he knew how to fire a handgun and the response was that the constables will take care of the situation.he had been to Naxal belts too

Believe it or not, but quite a few Mumbai police officers in field duty insist on P-35s instead of a Glock 'cause they feel that the greenhorns in the gangland do not recognize Glocks as something lethal. The all steel pistol is a better deterrent to them physcologically. Heard from the horse's mouth. The Glock remains mostly with senior officers and their bodyguards, more so for status and is rarely used. Have you ever seen an encounter specialist 's pic with a Glock.

Gosh
Cops want P35s to scare off mumbai gangs ? Will they ever learn their lessons ?
Were the recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai not a good wake up call for them to know its time to dump "gangwar" and "encounter" mentality and learn how to fight with terrorists. Losing so many of their own in the line of duty was also not enough ?
I have handled neither the P35 nor the G17 (read about the G17, light weight, low recoil good accuracy) but given a choice, I'd carry and go to bed with a 17 shot Glock 17 everyday.

Looks like they prefer the steel look instead of the polymer irrespective of what it does.the modern day criminals are so advanced that they dont run away seeing a gun and they are even capable of pulling out a better one.Hope our authorities understand this ASAP.

...ok a small update....
One more AK variant can be added to India's colorful AK inventory...
The Bulgarian Arsenal AR-1 and AR-1F ... http://www.arsenal-bg.com/defense_polic ... &AR-1F.htm
..saw it in the hands of a bunch of paramilitary personell in the ongoing anti-naxal push.
...and sorry - no pictures yet.
Add this to the already substantial numbers of the Arsenal AR and AR-F rifles.
regards,
cc

That story changed my view of Mumbai cops, not all of them are bad.
This brave soul took on two or three terrorists each armed with full auto AKs with at least 300 rounds, with a WWII vintage, poorly maintained .303 LE rifle with only three rounds. I guess, once a soldier always a soldier.
the gun actually jammed. But the terrorist was not killed. Watch the documentary Dispatches:Terror in Mumbai. They show the actual footage where the cop takes the rifle from his colleague and tries to fire. But the gun jams.
