Anyway i always thought a revolver was also a pistol. But I guess we are using the goverment's method of classification in this case.

Technically a revolver IS a pistol. The term pistol being inclusive enough to include single shots and pepperboxes from the old days right down to full auto pistols produced today. There is a reluctance in India to use the full term semi automatic pistol for semi autos and hence the pistol and revolver distinction in Indian parlance. Before I get too OT, there is also the typical Indian speak where gun implies shotguns whereas rifles, shotguns, handguns of all types, submachine guns, machine guns, artillery and more categories that I have left out would all come under the heading guns.

That bit from the dictionary only defines the word pistol. It does not say anything about a revolver being a type of pistol as you claim. As far as I am concerned, revolvers and pistols are two types of handguns.

Have to agree with Mehul, a 100% on this one.

A pistol is a handgun of any kind, revolver or semi-auto.

Revolvers and semi-automatic handguns are both pistols.

Take the words of two separate dictionaries and they insist that revolvers are pistols. To deny it is either ignorance or cussedness. I would suggest that latter is true here.
