STOP BUYING KNIVES RIGHT NOW OR ELSE YOU WONT HAVE MUCH HAIR LEFT ON YOUR BODY

TC
Thank you Jayanta, if you collect, get the Ti version, though it's much much more expensive. If this will be a user and one of purchase for EDC I would suggest get a Benchmade.jayanta mukherjee wrote:Nice blade you got there Moin. One of my favourite blades also but won't buy this one this year. Have made quite a number of purchases lately and will reserve it till next year.
BTW forgot to say an interesting review there.
Cheers
Jayanta

Overall it was a nice review which brought forward all the relevant observations and concerns.
Somehow I have never been crazy about these Spyderco knives. Spyderco does make some good knives and a lot of people like them. I personally like their sharpening systems but the same cannot be said about their knives except for a couple.
Do like Benchmade over many others not to mention a few other brands.
Secondly although folders are much more convenient to carry, I am somehow more inclined towards fixed blades. Although it is almost impossible to carry the fixed blades in city limits and I do not, do need to. But folders are simply something which a person cannot do without and are so convenient.
There is only one way out of this dilemma: get both.
Oh !! I think you missed all the others. They are scattered all over the forumMoin. wrote: You are yet to post the pics of teh blades you have hoarded apart from teh Zt and the BK![]()

Ok, here is in keeping with an old promise http://www.indiansforguns.com/viewtopic ... 20&t=15827
I hope you would not mind my posting this here but this might add to the current Benchmade vs Spyderco thing going on above (and well here are two more that you now know I own).
These are two of my favourite Benchmades: The Presidio and the HK (14205 I think)
Solid construction, Aluminum scales with a " two way shuttered" grip, Axis lock and build to last.
Now the HK (made by Benchmade for Heckler and Koch):
Again the same construction, solid steel liners under the G-10 scales, strong clip etc etc.
Excellent designs and on most of them.
These are typical characteristics of Benchmade blue and black class folders.
I am of the same opinion as you Moin regarding Benchmade.
But having said this both Benchmade and Spyderco are top notch knife makers and have dozens of models which are very different from each other and so every person would find something to suit his taste with either company.
So in the end it is a matter of personal preference.
Hi Amar; What did you use for dismantling, I brought a cheapo Chinese Torx Screw Set for Rs 75 and tried dismantling the Spyderco Tenacious unsuccessfullychoombak wrote:BTW, I disassembled and reassembled the benchmade grip for cleaning and lubing and it is the finest piece of engineering I'd say. I am impressed with the precision and tolerances of the components as well as the simplicity of the axis locking mechanism.
Thanks buddy, like a true knife enthusiast. I appreciate it.Moin. wrote: Don't mind at all![]()
The more the merrier.
This is not really my regular EDC, although I do carry this occasionally. Lets put it this way: if I carry a knife apart from my usual EDC the chances are that it is this knife. I really like it, the grind, the spear point and the thumb ramp. It is towards the larger side for folders, has a comfortable grip and a slim profile. The HK has some wear on the clip, is this your EDC Blade, very nice belly and a very interesting grind on the HK.
Its really very boring and tedious. The pictures and uploading etc.How about some nice pics of your Shrapnel, that's a very very hot chick you have![]()
I just love the Shrapnel and the Col.Moschin. But they seem way way over priced....
Yes, torx screw sets are available in good and large h/w stores. Typically the h/w shop will show you cheap chinese stuff, which get damaged easily (especially if the knife screws are loc'tited). Show a willingness to get a quality one, and he'll start showing you good Indian stuff, which costs around 300-500 rs. (chinese is ~100 or so).Moin. wrote:Hi Amar; What did you use for dismantling, I brought a cheapo Chinese Torx Screw Set for Rs 75 and tried dismantling the Spyderco Tenacious unsuccessfullychoombak wrote:BTW, I disassembled and reassembled the benchmade grip for cleaning and lubing and it is the finest piece of engineering I'd say. The EDC is another knife and you might be surprised which one![]()

But I will try to do it sometime.
The Shrapnel is a strong and thick blade (but small) with a nice sheath with two way carry options. The quality is good and the blade quote thick. It is intended to be more of a backup self defense thing although a knife is a knife and you have multiple use options for it.
It also has a "modified" rat tail tang. But I would not really doubt its strength.
The Moschin is a great knife towards the larger size and with a more comfortable handle. These appear and ARE basically knives for the military or other groups who have to carry knives as a tool. And I do NOT think of many knives as "tactical" or "military" knives.
The sheaths for all Extremas are way above the ordinary and provide excellent carry options.

Most knives require T6, T9, T10 (mainly between T4 and T10), so ensure you have these when you get one.
No I do not EDC the Shrapnel or even any large folder and you are right it is a small (SMALL) Victorinox.Moin. wrote: Let me guess,I am dead sure you EDC a SAK, I know most serious blade enthusiats do !!! I know you have the Shrapnel but I am sure you are sane enough not to EDC "The Shrapnel"

See the picture (borrowed):I am surprised that the Sharpnel has a Rat Tail Tang, but so does the legendary Kabar and the Kabar has proved it's mettle for decades.
It is not really bad but yes it does wear out and will wear out completely it it sees a lot of use. The purpose of the coating on the extremas is not rust prevention unlike the beckers and esee who use the 1095 steel which is not stainless. The Steel that Extrema uses is stainless. The purpose of the coating is to make the blade non reflective and to camouflage it.I know you had posted a pic of the Shrapnel few months back and teh coating had worn off. How resilinet is the coating on these to wear and tear.
No, the steel is not unheard of in fact it is the well known N690 Bohler Austrian steel which many other manufacturers use. See details: http://faq.customtacticals.com/steels/s ... s_n690.phpAlso ER use some uheard of steel for their knives, would you happen to know what the composition of this steel is, what if teh rockwell ratings and how good is the edge retenetion. I had read a thread some time back on the ER Khukri breaking on using it to chop wood in the wilderness etc....
Yes, I had read it too but at the same time I have seen axe handles breaking off and read about broken Beckers and Esee knives and machetes etc. Only way is to test it first before going out in the wilderness.I had read a thread some time back on the ER Khukri breaking on using it to chop wood in the wilderness etc....
