I dunno the fascination with that idiot, but know for sure that all Gerber made BG knives are next-to-junk in terms of use. Damn, I'll actually purchase a fire steel and a whistle separate than having it glued to the fixed blade sheath, and will be more careful as to what "High Carbon Stainless" steel (ouch! you can't have high carbon, and stainless at the same time!) really means if my life depends on it. Apart from marketing, the knives have little to no real and hard use utility. In fact, BG does not carry these, but carries the Bayley knife which has a lead time of 7 yrs. and costs 350 GBP (yes, british pounds) and above. I recommend opt for the ESEE RC-3 or RC-4 if you really want a heavy use fixed blade!

I would not dismiss him as an idiot too quickly. After all he did profit significantly from Gerber and still carried his custom super-blade . There are stories that he cheated too. As in stayed at a hotel between shoots etc. Don't know if that's true. But I submit that you cant pull all the extreme stuff he did without knowing a significant amount about survival etc. And Moin is right when he says the guy was a serious badass at some point. The SAS may not get too much media time but they do train the US Navy Seals for a bunch of things. I just keep in mind that it was a TV show and he was the showman. Did stuff for ratings and shock value but he did them well.

Having said that, if you want to learn survival, there a hundred better resources than Mr.Grylls.

OT, but amongst the better survivalist authors, you may wish to include books by Bradford Angier, Larry Dean Olsen, David Wescott, John "Lofty" Wiseman and Les Stroud in your reading list. All seem to have a pretty decent following.

Seems I have missed some interesting discussions! It was all quite interesting, all the informative posts and views.
Since the discussion was about Beckers, wilderness and "survival" knives I thought I would share a couple of pictures from the knives that I own that fit the category and these two were just mentioned in a couple of posts recently.

Becker BK2 with Micarta grips





Just changed the grips from the standard Grivory handles to the Micarta

The Fallkniven F1 Laminated VG-10



See below picture where the lamination lines are visible just above the edge. The center is VG-10 sandwiched between 440C layers on both sides. The VG-10 is harder, tougher and provides better edge retention while the 440 gives extra lateral strength.



The edge is convex.

Both knives are great and built for similar usage but are VERY different from each other and fit in a lot of varied usage categories although the primary targeted usage is the same for both.
