Thank you for the additional information on the special competition SIG X5 xl_target - I was quite unaware of the unique properties of this weapon! Quite commendable that the SHJ Shooting Club saw fit to invest in such a gem. :)

As you correctly pointed out, the single action combined with the light trigger sure does demand extra careful handling.

I hope to be able to take you up on your invitation sometime in the near future - and perhaps even watch you loading ammo - thank you!

BTW checked out your intro post - very impressive! We have something in common there - both of us are army brats!

You make it here and you can run the press and I'll show you how to make your own ammo, if you want.
It's not rocket science. You just have to be patient, careful and meticulous.

xl_target are you talking about reloading 9mm ammo? I think it would be practical in India as ammo is expensive provided that reloading is legal and one can buy the equipment here but I guess in USA reloading 9mm won't be cost effective.

I don't think you can get the components (primers, powder and bullets) in India so I don't know how feasible reloading would be there. Besides that 9mm is a PB in India.

I do reload 9mm, among other calibers. Contrary to what a lot of Internet experts say, even loading 9mm is cost effective. I was checking prices yesterday and 50 rounds of 9mm, Winchester White Box, 115 grain FMJ was 12.99 at Walmart (usually the cheapest source). Brass is basically free. Most of my brass is my own empties that I have been collecting for a while as well as what I picked up at the range. Prices have gone up in just the last few months but I can reload a box of 50 for $6.85.

I can reload .40 S&W for about the same price. A box of Federal Champion truncated cone 180 grain cartridges in .40 S&W is $15 to $17 in most places. The larger the caliber, the larger the savings. With the increased demand from China and India, the price of raw metals has increased tremendously lately. Prices of bullets and primers have taken a steep jump lately but it is still significantly cheaper to reload.

Not only that , you can tailor the load to your gun. You can increase or decrease the amount of powder to maximize accuracy. Or you can increase velocity and therefore increase muzzle energy. Or you can just load them light for plinking. You can increase or decrease the Cartridge Overall Length so it fits the chamber of your gun better. For example, CZ pistol's have a short leade (the portion of the barrel from the end of the chamber to the beginning of the rifling) and depending on the bullet's profile, the COL might have to be shorter so your bullets don't get jammed into the rifling when the slide slams shut. So you can see there is a lot of possibility for playing around and spending time at the reloading table and the range.

Very informative post but I still think reloading 9mm would be cost effective if one shoots a ton of ammo. Considering the initial cost of $1000 to $10,000 depending on the equipment time and efforts needed. I think it would be cost effective for frequent shooters like you but for occasional shooters reloading 9mm won't be cost effective but for big game hunters and .50BMG rifle owners it would be very cost effective.

BTW customizing ammo for different uses seems nice. I guess I'd start handloading if I ever manage to get into the holy place named United States of America :)
Is there any cookbook which defines how much powder to use, what should be the length of the cartridge after reloading etc. or one have to learn it by trail and error? If there's any source for this, I'd really appreciate it if you link me to them :)

Oh, another question. Is there any limit on on how much ammo one can own in USA. I mean will the ATF pay me a visit if I buy like 1,00000 ammo at once to get some discount.

Priyan,
I started a new post in Ammo and Accessories so we don't hijack this thread.
