Hi,

Just to add to the above....read in the TOI..Mumbai edition(yesterday) on the Times sports page,quote-"Shooters rejoice"..The Shooting fraternity on friday rejoiced as the FM has exempted "air-weapons" from customs duty to help athletes excel at national n international levels.Earlier only national shooters were allowed a duty free import of air-rifles/pistols but the new rule would enable even a beginner to buy duty free equipment.-unquote.....now for that Diana 35..hmmmm

Ashar, that's the original notice allowing the postal imports of airguns - a copy of it has been available under the "Legal Notices" section of our "Downloads" - http://www.indiansforguns.com/dload.php ... &cat_id=11

Do Note: The meaning of the word "free" in that 2005 notification only means that the categories of persons mentioned DO NOT require any special license/ import permit to import the goods mentioned (airguns in .177 cal) it has NO implication on the duty to be charged, which was approx 35% including the cess/ excise/ special/ customs duties etc.

It is ONLY NOW as per this new budget that these goods have become truly "duty free" - hence everyone's glee

i just spoke to a few clearing agents and an uncle of mine who deals in import - acc. to him and the agents, this ruling will come into action from the 1ST of march and not 1ST of April

Reason explained by my uncle - Custom and excise duties come into action from the day announced, Sales tax and other come into action from the new financial year, i.e. 1ST April. Kanwal told me this before, but since there were quite a few discrepancies , i cross-checked with 3 people

So can we have a list of who's ordering what

I have been wearing myself out hopping on one toe the other with joy. Cheers to the FM and lets get shooting and winning some medals for the guy.

I wanted to post way before but the home pc was down and out.

FRIENDS,
The recent budget announcement for waving custom duty is welcom step.
Our leader ship in sporting/shooting fertenity should be congratulaed.
What about the import policy, as per DGFT rules you canot import the subject
air gun without a shooter association membership card.
This needs to be addressed , as this gun is most elementry gun to enter the shooting practice and related fields.

Tejinder you can also belong to an NRAI affiliated club to get a match airgun in. If you find the Delhi State tedious join the Siri Fort air rifle club. Get in touch with Siddharth Sharma and he will take care of the details.

Yep, I agree with you - as would most of the folk here! And why even limit it to just airguns? Since Indian made firearms and ammunition are junk, all of these items should be added to the OGL import category allowing for commercial imports - which is the only way that quality arms and ammo can be made available to honest law abiding citizens at prices that aren't plain simple robbery!!

If car enthusiasts can now walk into a showroom and buy the latest Honda or Mercedes - then why the heck are we being penalised? While I have a rather low opinion of statistics (they can almost always be twisted to suit a viewpoint) - I would like to point out that the UN with it's anti-gun agenda and the local IANSA funded anti-gun outfits have been claiming that India has more than 40 million firearms. Well, the year that the total no. of motor vehicles in India crossed that number was in 1998, when the total no. of vehicles on Indian roads was 41 million. While I have not been able to dig out stats on the total no. of road deaths that year, the total no. of reported road deaths in the year 2000 was 78,911 and this figure keeps climbing each year... Contrast that with the total no. of reported homicides in India that same year, which was 37,170. While I have not been able find data on how many of those homicides were committed using a gun, it would be safe to assume that it was well below 10% (if even that). So without a shred of doubt motor vehicles are more dangerous to the lives of our citizens... as keep on repeatedly saying, why aren't these people howling for a total ban on motorised transport?

The United States with much freer gun laws (in most states) and many times more guns in civilian hands than in India had 12,658 reported homicides that same year. Obviously gun control does not work - so why continue to curtail the freedoms of our citizens by clinging on to an ideology that clearly is not delivering on it's promise?

We are now waiting for their "compact snub nose" a.k.a the 'Nano'

to do more damage and pile up on the statistics.

Well, I'm too happy right now to get dissed again, I'll just bask in this warmth for some time and get the gun I was pining for. The future can get better or worse, but the present; Well !! We never had it so good. I guess I'll just live for the moment.

Any new developments on this front?

Will it be etched in the throngs of history that 2008 witnessed Indians getting their money's worth of gun?

I just spoke with Gunmark, the so-called official Diana stockist.. He says that there's been no government ruling on the same and the rules will remain so. He also mentioned that such a furore was caused a while ago too and that died down too.

He seemed a li'l distressed with the whole idea. Cant blame him though. How can they justify the superhigh premiums anymore?

Once the dust settles, I'll make a purchase. A 97k or a TX200 will see a proud owner in me!!
