Brothers in arms gun for PC
SANJAY K. JHA
New Delhi, Aug. 18:

Question: What does it take to unite India’s politicians?

Answer: Guns.

Their love of the weapon, ostensibly, prompted a motley group of MPs from various parties to follow Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh today to the Prime Minister to complain against the Union home minister. Their grouse: P. Chidambaram plans to make gun licences harder to obtain for ordinary citizens.

The team included Jaswant Singh, S.S. Ahluwalia and Shahnawaz Hussain from the BJP; Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh from the Samajwadi Party; and Naveen Jindal, Anil Lad, Sanjay Singh, Fransisco Sardinhia, Manish Tewari and Rakesh Singh from the Congress.

Digvijay led them on behalf of the National Association of Guns Rights in India (Nagri) in his capacity as its chief patron. Nagri members said the cross-party representation was not surprising at all, and claimed that around 500 MPs were ready to join their campaign.

The team told Manmohan Singh that the unprotected villagers would be hit the worst by the amendments to the Arms Act Chidambaram was planning, making police verification mandatory for a gun licence and requiring applicants to prove grave and imminent threat to their lives.

The MPs criticised the provision that makes the Union home ministry the licensing authority, taking the responsibility away from the state governments. They handed a memorandum to the Prime Minister, who promised a fresh look at the proposed amendments, sources said.

Asked why the MPs had not met Chidambaram first , Nagri sources said the home minister had not given them an appointment despite requests.

Digvijay’s move comes amid his running battle with Chidambaram over the home minister’s approach to the Maoist threat.

That is some good news again :).
Delightful to see that media is covering the matter (literal reporting as is at least).

What sounds myopic here is that they're clowning it as a personal face-off between Digvijay Singh and P Chidambaram. Regardless of what it is for the two of them, the matter is of immense importance & implications for the people of India. But sadly they don't see it like that.

And then we twist nose at reading somewhere that Indians are a reactive society that never foresees its blunders; it is damage control later, rather than pro-activeness.

500 MPs .. .. surely someone is working hard !!

Great work of NAGRI. As for un-precendented support of 500 MPs, its blessing in disguise.

"Nagri members said the cross-party representation was not surprising at all, and claimed that around 500 MPs were ready to join their campaign."

Is this a fact??? Are 500 MPs really willing to join the campaign?? Or are we patting ourselves on the back too quickly??
It is no doubt a victory for us in that, all the rules in the new proposed Arms Policy may not have gone through, but in the bigger picture, this is but a small battle, the war is still up ahead!

Sorry to sound sceptical or pessimistic but I am just trying to get the facts now it self when we can actually do something about it, rather than sit tight and think that every thing is fine and dandy and then have the politicos scr@w us when the time comes. I believe such has happened more than once.

Just to clarify, no one is exactly sure how the reporter got the figure of 500... which is why there is a green smiley icon next to the thread title. While many MPs have been contacted & sensitised (both directly by NAGRI and/ or indirectly through many members/ concerned citizens who are all working independently towards our shared goals), there is still a long way to go before we can be sure of 500 or so MPs being firmly on our side.

So gents, roll up your sleeves and carry on with the good work - there is much work to be done in the days/ weeks/ months/ years ahead! :)

Cheers!

It at least shows us what could be achieved if we put our minds and hearts to it.Those blessed souls at NAGRI have already demonstrated that.
