Mauser .22 rifle querries.....

Post by ajayplahane » Mon May 09, 2011 7:41 pm

Dear friends,
Today I purchased a .22 Mauser rifle.
Description is....
Walnut stock with 'Mauser' and 'Germany' words engraved on it . Also engraved is ' Y R A ' in bold and big letters, which I didnt understand.
Barrel says...PATRONE 22 LONG RIFLE AND Mauser-Werke A. G. OBERNDORF A. N.
Serial no. is 110170
There are other letters, which I cant read.
Backsight adjustable upto 200.(Mtrs or Furlongs  )
Five shot, but unfortunately no magazine.
Wood stock broken and needs replacement, barrel a bit rusted, but not upto level of pitting possibility,
should work fine after working on it,bore is very less used, and in very good condition.Shd need upto 15k to renew.

I need advice on following...
What kind of model is this ? Any information about it ?
How and where can I get a five shot magazine for it ? How to ascertain, which magazine is needed for it
Does anybody, if identified the model, have a spare one ?
By the way, I must answer the question in some of yours' mind, which I always have in mine, whenever I read a post on any buy/sell thread..
Got it at 41k.
Pl help...

Ajay.

Of course, baruaji,
BTW, I just got info on collectible arms and .....(something ) site. reproduce here..
DESCRIPTION: Very nice German Mauser Es340B target rifle in .22 LR caliber. The rifle was manufactured by Mauser factory in Oberndorf in the 1930-s. The rifle features a strong DSM-34 type action. The left side of the receiver displays following markings, "Mauser - Werke A. G. - Oberndorf a.N.", "Crown over B" and "Crown over U". The left side of the chamber shows following markings, "Crown over B", "Crown over U", "Crown over G" and "459". The receiver ring displays a beautiful "Mauser" banner. A very nice Mauser cartouche is present on the right side of the stock. Matching serial numbers (the matching serial numbers are stamped on the receiver, barrel, stock, rear sights and bolt; there are no numbers stamped on all the remaining parts, which is correct for this model). All the serial numbers are factory original, and they were not restamped. German style, scope and sight rails are factory-machined into the receiver. The rifle is fitted with a standard, Mauser manufactured 200 meter adjustable rear sight. Fixed, European sporting style front sights. Steel trigger guard with diamond checkering. .
Out of above, I have found data in red colour matching with my rifle. Other may also match. in addition, left side receiver also displays "Crown over G"
I shall try to post pics tomorrow...
thanks,
Ajay

This rifle is relatively rare, and magazines are near impossible to find. Some poorly made Mexican-made replacements were available in the US in the sixties. However, the French produced this rifle as a training rifle after WWII. If you have any contacts in France, magazines for the MAS Model 45 .22 training rifle is what you want.

No question that your rifle is not a French product. However, after WWII the French adopted the last of the German Mauser cal. .22 training rifle as a repeater for their training rifle, producing it first in Oberndorf, then in France as the MAS M45. The action is not the same as yours, lacking the long extractor, but the magazines are identical. So, if any magazines to fit your rifle are going to be found, it will be in France.

Hi cotton cheese,
After a long struggle, I could post the images. They r , as I said, replica of what u posted.
May I know the details of the weapon...? As I can see, stock is broken, though genuine; rusting can be corrected, but most imp is that the bore is very good and very less used.A small disturbance u see inside, is not any pitting but a particle of dust or so. Didnt clean it. Wish to renew it at Nagpur at Abhijeet Deshmukh, my friend(Nagpur Armory).Very good smithy there. Will show again after it is done. Will be geting a scope of Bushnell from the seller.
Is it reeally french, post-WW-II piece ? Pl enlighten ... What about the magazine.? Ay possibility of walnut availability ? Thinking of going for teakwood. Here, in Melghat, we get ample and world's best teak. Shisam also available. And yes, is it advisable to maintain the same stock, by refinishing it ?
As u can see, the previous owner was careless enough to spill warnish all over the metal part, while applying to the stock.
I think, after renewing, it should be a fair price, at abt 60k...
Pl help.....
Ajay

Ajay: No, this is a different model from what I assumed you had from your first description. For this you would have to find an original magazine. And the odds of doing that are not good.
Sorry for giving you false hope. :(

Two rivers,
You just tried to help; I appreciate.Thanks.Didnt match, my bad luck....
But had it come true, getting it from France was also not a small task for me.
I am waiting for Cottage cheese's comments. It is probable that his pics match with this gun, and he can provide me vital info.Others r also requested to provide info on the weapon type and details.
If somebody has it, pl post pics of magazine, so that I can rebiult it ditto. :D
Knowing what exactly I am having in my hand, is my prime concern...
Thanks..

Hi Ajay,

Actually... I have little else to add to what has been discussed on this thread... in fact I've learned quite a few things!

As I'd mentioned, the pictures were emailed to me by a middleman and I never handled the piece. That's about all I can contribute.... also in case you've not come across it already, there was a brief feature on Nitroexpress.com's facebook page some weeks back on Mauser .22Rimfire rifles... perhaps it'll prove to be more helpful than I....

Mauser .22 rifles of that period are somewhat confusing, because Mauser used the number part of the designation for the style, and then a letter suffix for the action as a new model was developed.
Repeaters were the Mm 410, with lightweight barrel; Ms 420 with heavy barrel and tangent rear sight. This is the one CC has pictured. Basically, they came both as hunting and target rifles.
When they went to a different action, the "Mini 98", they added a "B" to the designation. In between there is a model with an action like yours, but the magazine of the "B". Finally came the "KKW", which in single-shot form was adopted by the German army as a training rifle, and was produced by a number of companies. The KKW then became MAS 45, a repeater, after WWII.

Cotton cheese,
This is too confusing..Nitroexpress is not matching my piece. You owe to me something now....
Isnt it a replica of what u have posted... Pl give details of the guns u posted..
What was the piece u had uploaded ?
Puru Baruah, I am sailing in the same boat. The pics were one time transsaction with a middleman..no further clue ..
Two rivers, I believe, the gun is replica of cc post.
What u intend to say is a big puzzle for me..
If nobody has any clue, I shall be constrained to submitting myself to a local smith....
Can somebody tell me what I am having...

Ajay
