the calibre should be stamped in small letters on the gun. look for it carefully. why is it missing the grip?
i am puzzled. this has the look of an illegal desi katta, though i may be wrong. can you tell us more about how you got hold of this?

Hi Veer,
My sentiments are similar to Hamiclar's.Could you please tell us the source of the handgun? Is it yours or is it with a dealer that you found it?Is it in that condition because it's awaiting repairs? If you don't know the calibre, how did you come to know about the revolver? You need to give us more details here.Thank you.
Best-
Vikram

From the link provided by Timmy
“IF THERE IS NO CALIBER MARKING ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE BARREL THEN IT WAS MANUFACTURED FOR BLACK POWDER”
The revolver looks legit. to me.No ammo in the market for it though.
Veer,
Sell it and get an IOF .32 revolver.

Looks like a H&R , .32 short . Ammo is difficult to find but should not be impossible. No desi katta this

.
These were manufactured between 1895 and 1941. There were two models, first model 1895-1904 was designed for black powder cartridge pressures & had markings on top of the barrel . The second model 1905-1941 was designed for smokeless powder cartridges pressures & had markings on the left side of the barrel .The calibers offered were 7 rounds .22 rimfire (short and long only) and 5 rounds .32 centerfire .

after he died in 1990, we always had only d licence but we were not aware ,where d gun was untill now.. and now tht i ve found it.. it was all rusted...
i used a scrapper paper to clean it, which has also removed a bit of remaining polish on it..
thts d reason u r gettin a desi look, my father told me tht its a webley nd scott... but only now after cleaning it i can read the imprint.
which says : "H.&R. arms co. worcester mass. USA"
i also need to know about how do i get d liscence transferred on mine or my fathers name. as i ve found d revolver now..

Hi Veer,
Deposit the revolver immediately to the Police Station or to a Gun Dealer with the explanation that you have just found the revolver alongwith the unrenewed licence of your grandfather and then try to get the licence for it. From your post it is evident that the arms is now in unlicenced condition as the owner died long ago though there is an unrenewd licence for the same. Deposit it immediately.

Veer:
The barrel, I wouldn't worry about. As they said on that thread, "barrel lengths of 2½ (rare), 3¼ (standard), 4, 5 & 6 inches"
However, from your pictures, I did note that one area -- couldn't make out what it was, which you note is a trigger lock. I don't have any explanation for that.
The thing that led me initially to believe your revolver was a Harrington & Richardson was that part that is behind the trigger. That's the sear, the part that actually engages the full cock notch on the hammer alnd allows the hammer to be released when the trigger presses against it. This is a design often seen on H&R top break revolvers.

also as all fo u can see in d pictures posted earlier, tht the hammer remains in d cocked postion, and i am unable to decock it...
i tried following the procedure suggested by a few internet portals,
which says , to hold the trigger with forefinger, and the hammer with the thumb, thn partially press the triger so tht the hammer gets loose, and then push back the hammer manually..
but it is not working tht way...
plz help...
any one knows how to decock it?
if u can provide me the line diagram of the inside mechanism, may be thn i can fnd a logic... to uncock it..

veer,
Thanks for the clarification.
Since neither you or anyone else in the family has this revolver on their license you must realise that you are in the possession of an unlicensed firearm, which is a major offence, and could lead to a long trip to jail. I second Lawman's suggestion that you deposit it with the Police or a Gun Dealer immediately, and then follow up trying to get in transferred on your license. Every moment you waste will weaken your case further.
And stop typing in textspeak please.

Veer - Things to do.
Deposit firearm(whats left of it) in the nearest police station.
Get a receipt for it.
Apply for arms license attach relevant docs (copy of Grandfathers license, copy of deposit receipt) etc.
Wait for sanction.
Others.
just out of curiosity - in such a case is there still a chance of the license not being issued.

Hi Veer, submit the application on the ground of family heirloom. There should be crime-less background of the applicant with good mental health and there is no need for strong financial background also.
There is no reason to seize the revolver by the police.
First try any reputed gun dealer for deposit of the revolver.
