Dear Skyman,
Buying handguns is like buying shoes. It's not just about which one is your favourite, or the best- it's more about which one suits you, and which one is more comfy for you to operate, and handle. It goes with your personality.
For instance, I am a big fan of Beretta 92fs. There's no doubt it's one of the best guns.. but my hands are small. To handle that handgun, you need big palms to grip it firmly. Gripping is one of the most important things in handling a firearm.
Where a 1911 is concerned, it fits perfectly in my hands because of it's sleek design.
So which one is best handgun ever made .. depends on if it's made for you!
Thanks,
AT.

My vote goes for the swiss made SIG P210 in big caliber hand guns in pistol category (I have shot Beretta 92fs, 1911, Glock17, CZ75, Colt Python .357, S&W .44 also) followed by the CZ75 (for it's sheer beauty) and the Manurhin MR73 in the revolver category (Sorry, I did not have the chance to shoot a Korth). The P210 is a real piece of art with swiss clockwork precision and it has the smoothest trigger of all the above mentioned guns I have shot.
For the small caliber (.22LR) I like the Hammerli exesse followed by the Ruger MK series.
best regards

P.S:
I also would like to add that I have also shot the Walther PPK, the Uniques (French made) & the Tokarev. I have mentioned all these guns because they are known to everyone keeping aside the match grade .22LR weapons like the Walther, Tesro, FWB etc. Amongst the lesser known ones, my personal real favourites are the muzzleloader handguns, the Feinwerkbau Rogers & Spencer replica revolver in .44 caliber and the single shoter Barlow underhammer pistol in .40 caliber. Precision and pleasure of shooting.

Best for what purpose?
We should define the use that it will be put to before we can chose one to fit the role.
For example as a target or a range pistol, the P220 is a great pistol. For a practical shooting match or for home defence, a SIG P226 would be great but it would not be that easy to conceal, especially inside the waistband (IWB). (Actually, I have heard of people who carry the P226 IWB but they're probably pretty big guys.)
One can buy perfectly functional and reliable handguns for concealed carry starting at under $200 (like the
Keltec P11) but I would not want to use one for a bullseye match or a practical shooting match.
For sheer power in an auto pistol, the 50 AE Desert Eagle might fit the bill but my hands barely fit around the grip. The gun is practically a crew served weapon and the ammo would bankrupt me in a hurry. The recoil is bad enough that a quick follow up shot is out of the question, at least for me. Not really very practical.
Whatever pistol that I pick would have to suit the purpose and would have to go bang every time I pull the trigger. You can get by with an ammo-finicky or slightly balky pistol for plinking but not for concealed carry or home defense or if you want to win matches.
I have only one pistol that has never ever failed to fire when I pulled the trigger and that is my CZ75 P-06. I usually carry this in the winter because I have a coat on and so I can carry it in a regular holster without it showing. Even my SIG P225 failed to chamber a round (once only) when I had too much grease on the rails and it was cold outside.
I guess that I am saying that the best pistol for one job might not be the best for another job.

Lets say the one and only handgun, which is suitable for many purposes, like a white shirt or jeans.

I dont know how you can use a white shirt and Jeans in Arctic environment...he he...
I will go for a .22 Smith and Wesson revolver with a 6 inch barrel, ammo is available in every country, it's light, concealable and cheap......

Aloha,
Best handgun MADE?
If you're looking at standard production, non custom revolvers, I'd say an early Colt Python.
In the case of S & W almost any pre-lock gun is OK. Some are better than others.
My personal Do Everything gun is a S & W Model 57 or 58 in 41 magnum.
I also like the S & W Model 10, 13, 15, 64, 65 and 66 in 38/357.
My peronal favorite for a CCW carry gun is the M-58 that has been cleaned up for concealed carry.
If you're talking Semi-Autos, the Wife and I prefer Beretta 92 or 96. We have both.
Yes, the Beretta has a larger grip than the 1911, We do not consider grip size a problem.
The Wife has small hands as does another woman we know. Both say that if they like the gun, they
will Adapt to it and make it work for them. And they do. They have no problems handling any Beretta
80 or 90 series handgun well.
Out of the box, Berettas have less problems than many 1911s that I have shot.
Also, there are many Beretta Factory parts and accessories availible for them. Mix and match
works well for Berettas.
My favorite Beretta is the 96 Compact Inox. It has a shorter Centurion length slide, barrel and a
shorter grip length.
A fact that is not well known is that, with a Beretta, one can change the 40 cal barrel with a 9mm
barrel and shoot a 9mm in a 40 slide and use a 40 magazine. Yes, a 9mm will work out of a 40 mag.
But, you can not change a 9 mm barrel with a 40 and shoot the 40 from the 9mm slide because the 40 case head
is too big for the 9mm slide. But, you can use a 9 mm magazine to shoot 40 cal bullets, it will work.
To sum up, for every day use a S & W or Beretta is fine.
If you Collect, Both companies have made some very desirable guns. Of the 2, the Wife and I Prefer
to collect Beretta Limited Specials.
