Hi,

Has anyone on this forum ever fired a Colt Single Action Army model chambered for the .44-40 Winchester cartridge? How accurate is the weapon with this cartridge? What is the recoil like? Some Smith and Wesson double action revolvers were also chambered for this cartridge as were some modern ones. I look forward to posts from members who have handled and fired these weapons.

Regards.

I have never fired a colt SAA in that caliber, though I have fired a Ruger Vaquero and when I was young my father had a Winchester 1873 in that caliber. It is quite easy and pleasant to shoot, compared to a 357 or 44 magnum, the latter makes my hand hurt in most handguns.

With the resurgence of cowboy action shooting in the US, the cartridge has regained some of its former popularity. I would expect that in India, it would be hard to obtain. Here's the issue, if I had an original Colt SAA, I would not fire it (well, not very much at least ;)).
The only handgun in .44-40 that I have fired was a Ruger also. It was with cowboy action handloads so they were pretty light. I can't tell you what the factory loads were like but I can't think they would be very objectionable out of that gun.

Hi Jonah,

I too am still looking for one. I am hoping that being different from the popular non-prohibited bores it may be available for a lower price. It has sufficient muzzle energy to be useful if one is in a tight corner. I wish you good luck in your search. I look forward to your good wishes also.

Regards.
