expect more recoil as the muzzle velocity is greater, and may have difficulty in extracting the empty case as the pistol round is rimless.

If you are lucky a few missing fingers.
The pistol .32ACP is a rimless cartridge where as the .32 Long revolver cartridge is a semi rimmed one to sit properly in the revolver cylinder.
No, they are not interchangeable.

Actually the .32ACP round is semi rimmed and thus can in theory be used in chambers meant for rimmed cartridges.
If the revolver in question is sturdy, occasional use can be attempted... I know of a few S&W owners who've been using a staple of 32ACP pops for a longish time... not particularly healthy for the gun and certainly for the shooter in time.

cc

Ankur: Look up "moon clips". These can be used to hold semi rimmed cartridges together for insertion into a revolver. As CC has already pointed out the .32 ACP is a semi rimmed cartridge. Moon clips also act as a speed loader.

First it all depends on the quality of the revolver. Back in t he '60's a good quantity of webley Mark VI's (.455) had their cylinders faced off several thousands of an inch and I used my two with .45 ACP ammo in them for years.
With the .32 ACP (the cartridge for the automatic) the rim is semirimmed and will provide sufficient purchase on the cylinder so it won't fall completely in the cylinder and cant' be reached by the firing pin. Extraction could be iffy as the small rim may slip past the extractor.
If you have an older .32 not chambered for the S&W Long, I would be very hesitant. Also some of those made in local shops like in the tribal area of pakistan I'd be very learry.
As for a well made colt webley or s&w I wouldn' t hesitate using them in a pinch

The pressure of .32 ACP is approx 6000 to 7000 PSI more than .32 S&WLong hence if you intend to use .32 ACP instead of .32 S&WLong, the quality of revolver should be very good.
Many people have fired hundreds of rounds of .32 ACP from S&W Revolver Model 31-1 without any problem but that's Smith.
If you have IOF Revolver, kindly avoid using .32 ACP under all circumstances.

I have a H&R % shot revolver and due to shortage of S&W ammo in my place I use .32 ACP ammo, I have fired alsmost 30 rounds without any issue. My younger brother got IOF revolver last week and I was amazed to see that the grooves of new revolver were not good as my 102 years old revolver.
We have done some target practice with .32 ACP was in my little revvie though we didnt and dont want to try this in IOF revolver.
Thanks,
Wajhi

It is incorrect that the 32 ACP cannot be fired in a standard 32 S&W Long revolver chamber.
As cottage cheese mentioned, the 32 ACP is a semi rimmed cartridge. No need of any half moon clips etc.
No problem in most modern revolvers, including IOF.
The issue is the carbon ring that develops in a revolver chamber at the case mouth. This needs to be cleaned or may interfere with the fit of a standard cartridge.

As far as the IOF revolver is concerned I would have strong reservations for doing that. On this very forum there have been debates whether KF .32 S&W long ammo should be used in a IOF .32 revolver or not because of the inconsistent pressures generated by the said ammo. Some members in past have even suggested to use only imported .32 S&W long ammo in the IOF .32 revolver to avoid subjecting the IOF revolver to the inconsistent pressures. In my opinion appropriate ammo made for a particular firearm should only be used . Experimenting otherwise (especially consistently) is inviting injury or damage to the firearm or both .
