Hi, Karan...
i have one - Colt Cobra .38 Spl.....in 2" (snubby)...
This is with origional Grip,
Right now have changed Pachmayr grip, with finger grooves -- will post that pic later

Is .38 Spl a Prohibited Bore in Maharashtra?
.357 is a PB in Maharashtra and I believe .38 is also a PB in Maharashtra.

The Arms Act applies equally throughout the Union of India, therefore the list of restricted calibres is the same everywhere in India.ruger_rugged wrote:Gurus,

To answer your question - .38 S&W Special and .357 S&W Magnum are both NPB throughout India. If someone tells you any different he/ she is not aware of the law!

.38 Spl & .357 are PB in Maharashtra whereas NPB in Delhi. It means that states have control over defining calibers. Gurus, is it possible to find a government document which draws a line and puts popular calibers in two colums NPB & PB.

Arms Act applies all over India it is not a State subject, however States can restrict (to a certain extent) how they apply the law. For example when All India Validity was given to my license, it was
"All India (with State & Local Restrictions)".
However as far as I know, a State can not place restrictions on new calibers or decide not to apply existing restrictions without first getting approval from the MHA. This has been done in Jammu & Kashmir & Punjab (I think) in issuing Prohibited Bore licenses due to the insurgent problem.
The prohibited bore list in the Arms Act carries only 5 calibers:
9mm Rimless &.45 Rimless Pistol cartridges
.380 Rimmed & .455 Rimmed Revolver cartridges
.303 Rifle 7.62mm Rifle and .410 Musket cartridges
I don't know if any have been added recently, but any firearms that can chamber and fire the above cartridges are Prohibited. All others are Non Prohibited!!

This PB/NPB is a meaningless vestige of British rule, probably introduced during Lord Curzon's time. Contrary to usual perception that it has something to do with ballistic properties of the cartridge, this PB and NPB concept has nothing to do with ballistic properties. Any cartridge used by armed forces is a PB cartridge. Rest of all the cartridges not used by armed forces are NPB cartridges. It was done with assumption that during possible mutiny etc. Indian soldiers in armed forces could not help civilians by supplying ammunition from government armories as it would not fire in civilian firearms due to difference in bore size. Also ammunition looted by rebels from government armories would not fire in civilian firearms.
Only prohibited bores are listed. Every bore that is not on the prohibited bore list is a non prohibited bore.
