Re: need info abour H&R ARMS CO. revolver i have
I,ll answer your queries one by one
1. For caliber : You can measure dia of barell with scale in mm and then divide it with 25.4. The value you will get will be calibre of your revolver. Suppose its dia is approx 9mm. divide it with 25.4, you will get .38. Got it.
2. Once you get calibre you can easily get ammo.

Hi Veer,
From the look of the handgun, it appears to be either a .32 or .38. You can have some idea from the license it will have the details of the firearm. You may also visit this web site for some more details:-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H_&_R_Firearms
In case your grandfather was in the Civil Service of British India , the revolver can be a .38 and in that case you may have difficulty in obtaining a license, as it is a PB. In any case, deposit the gun with the authorities without any delay.
Wish you good luck.

Just so we don't forget, only guns capable of cambering and firing service .38 ammo is PB.
All other .38s would be NPB.
Hopefully grandpas H&R isn't one of them.

Veer:
Regarding the caliber, I think it safe to say that your revolver is a .32. My reasoning is that your revolver in the pictures is clearly a 6 shot weapon. The H&R automatic ejecting double action revolvers were 6 shot in .32 caliber and 5 shot in .38 caliber, so your revolver must be a .32.
Regarding a parts illustration, there doesn't seem to be too many of them to be found. I would suggest, that if you want to understand how the lockwork operates, that you study this picture:
http://www.gun-parts.com/harringtonrich ... %20pic.jpg
The diagram is too large to appear on the forum -- use the link. This is for a .22, but all of the DA H&Rs operated similarly. You need to remember that more modern weapons used a coil spring mainspring, rather than the older leaf spring. You can go back a page:
http://www.gun-parts.com/harringtonrichardson/
and match what you can of your parts to the individual model part pictures listed. The mechanism isn't too complicated, and as I said, most DA lockworks were similar.
However, I cannot account for the safety that your revolver has.
This is about the extent of what I can offer to you in the way of help. Sorry that it is so scanty.

Well it means "only guns capable of chambering and firing service .38 ammo is PB"
If you want it simpler....
Only the .380" bore rimmed cartridge which is in Indian Government/police/military service is classified as a Prohibited Bore. This is clearly stated in the Schedule I, Category 1 (c) of the Arms Rules 1962.
The .380" cartridge in Indian Service is the .380/200
The restriction also extends to any firearm that can chamber and fire the above cartridge.
For simplicity it is often called .38
This adds to the confusion because there is a long list of cartridges that are called .38" or .380"
No need to worry- as long as its not the service cartridge, all else is Non Prohibited Bore.
Hope this clarifies.
